IFRS accountant Dr. Barry Epstein, CPA, CFF, is a director in the Chicago office of SS&G, Inc., a Top 50 CPA and accounting firm. He is an international accounting expert, author, and litigation consultant with over 40 years experience.

Dr. Epstein specializes in the following areas:

  • International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
  • International accounting convergence (GAAP and IFRS)
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS)
  • Financial reporting fraud and securities litigation
  • Securitization and derivatives
  • Accountants' liability and accountant malpractice
  • Auditors' liability and auditor malpractice
  • Sarbanes-Oxley corporate governance matters
  • White collar defense

Dr. Epstein assists international corporations, financial analysts and professional investors in interpreting financial statements and reports prepared in accordance with IFRS.

He has advised U.S. and foreign-based professionals, and business entities that are involved in or are contemplating joint ventures, new vendor or customer relationships, and establishing subsidiary operations, to educate them regarding the effects of financial reporting under IFRS.

Dr. Epstein analyzes the selection and application of accounting principles to look for "red flags" that may emerge when international financial statements prepared in accordance with IFRS are reconciled with U.S. GAAP. Areas of possible exposure are identified, such as those resulting from alternative use of fair values, and accounting for financial instruments and hedging transactions.

As a respected international author and accounting expert on GAAP and IFRS, Dr. Epstein understands the "Norwalk Agreement" reflecting FASB's and IASB's commitment to international accounting convergence. His work has included consulting assignments for European, Asian and Middle Eastern firms.

Cases

In addition to consulting with corporations as an international accounting expert, Dr. Epstein is an experienced litigation consultant on accounting, auditing, and financial reporting matters. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Justice turn to Dr. Epstein regularly for his work as an accounting expert. He has served as a consulting or testifying expert in over 90 securities litigation and business dispute cases.

A California Appellate Court referenced Dr. Epstein's expert report in an accountant's liability case. See Kouri v Superior Court (BDO Seidman, LLP), Mar. 8, 2007. No. B189876.
